Ariel Pink’s Before Today LEAK

9 Apr

Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti’s new album “Before Today” drops June 8th, but YeahD’s got a copy today. Taking 6 months to complete, the album is wholly-fi the whole way through…with real drums too, but don’t let that scare you. Ariel Pink has still got it, dropping 70s hooks and his signature scattered oddities (and sodomies).

“Bright Lit Blue Skies” (cover of this) and “Fright Night (Nevermore)” are standouts, reminiscent of the master of pop Ariel Pink we’re familiar with, while tracks like “Butt-House Blondies” and “The Wig” dip in pockets of rock music I thought were long dead. I guess those tunes are fun to run through with a band, but not really what I’m looking for on an Ariel Pink record… or any record…

“Reminiscences” sounds like a tune straight off of Worn Copy, and is a welcome addition to the album. As with every other Ariel Pink record, there’s a good degree of experimentation, lending itself to hits and misses, but overall Before Today should hit you up pretty good. Toke up
